“Part of the Business Development Unit’s role is to deliver bespoke courses for both UK and overseas employers”
A group of Libyan oil workers recently gained an HND Engineering Systems from James Watt College after their employer arranged a bespoke course for them at the college’s Finnart campus.
The 12 Waha Oil Company employees moved from Libya to Greenock to complete the HND on a specially designed ‘fast track’ programme, which meant they completed the course in one year instead of the traditional two.
Ahmad Almahtout, one of the students that completed the course, said “the lecturers really supported us in our studies; they were extremely friendly and helped us to build our knowledge and practical skills.”
Billy Scott, the college’s Business Development Manager, commented: “Part of the Business Development Unit’s role is to deliver bespoke courses for both UK and overseas employers, but designing the fast track HND for Waha Oil Company was still a challenge.
“As well as condensing two years work into a one year course, which meant that staff and students had to attend classes through normal holiday periods, we recognised the students’ support needs and arranged additional English classes for the students. The students and the staff members rose to the challenge and it proved to be an extremely successful programme!
“We worked closely with Waha Oil Company to ensure that their requirements, and those of the SQA, were met. Waha Oil Company is the second largest oil producer in Libya and for James Watt College to be selected to provide such essential training is a huge achievement.”
