At James Watt College we are particularly proud of extensive range of study options,
particularly in the field of Open Learning. Indeed, we now offer the widest choice
of courses available through Open Learning in the West of Scotland.
The field of Open Learning is so wide-ranging and diverse, it can be difficult to
get a good understanding of the concept of Open Learning itself, and the implications
it has on the learner.
What is Open Learning?
Attending college on a full-time basis is just not possible for everyone, affected
by where you live, what you do, your personal choice or perhaps family commitments.
This is where Open Learning can provide you with the education you require, while
fitting in with your own individual circumstances.
Open Learning is as the name suggests - an 'open' format to learning,
whereby you choose where, when and to a greater or lesser degree how you study.
There are a number of learning formats to choose through Open Learning. These include:
Distance Learning: where your chosen course is studied at a distance
to the College itself. A wide range of Open Learning packages is available for you
to study in the comfort of your own home, supported by a College-based tutor through
phone, e-mail, letter or face-to face (by appointment). Some courses may require
very occasional visits to the College for access to specialised equipment or assessment.
On-line Learning: where your coursework and assessments are available
on-line through the Internet. In addition, support for learners can be provided
through our Virtual Learning Environment, a unique support system set up for students
studying through on-line learning. This is a rapidly expanding field within the
Open Learning framework, indeed the College has one of the largest portfolios of
on-line courses in the country.
