Hairdressing
Summary: Details of Hairdressing Vocational Programmes as part of the Schools Partnership with James Watt College.
What will you learn?
Over the two year course pupils will have a hands on
approach and introduction to a career in hairdressing.
Pupils will complete 4 units that cover both the required
skills and knowledge.
Inverclyde Vocational Programme is a 2-year course and
throughout S3 and S4 pupils will work towards 4
Intermediate 1 units:
- Salon Awareness - An introduction to the roles and
responsibilities of team members in a hairdressing
salon will be given and the opportunity to explore the
role of an individual initially entering work in a
hairdressing salon. Pupils will participate in a
number of activities to help them develop their
understanding of their role within the salon structure.
This unit also includes basic knowledge of health and
safety legislation.
- Working in the Salon - This is a practical unit which
introduces the pupil to general salon duties. Pupils will
learn how to shampoo and condition hair and develop
styling techniques.
- Employability Skills - On completion of this unit pupils
will be able to demonstrate a positive approach when
interacting and communicating with others including
customers and team members. These employability
skills have been identied by the hairdressing industry
as essential and are transferable to other industry
areas.
- Creativity - Pupils will be encouraged to express their
creativity by allowing them to explore and interpret
their own individuality and style. Pupils will design and
produce an image/hairstyle to be reproduced on a
mannequin head.
Apart from learning new skills relevant to the individual
units, pupils will also naturally work towards core skills such
as communication, numeracy, working with others, problem
solving and Information Technology – all of which are
invaluable when entering the world of work.
Where will you study?
The Hairdressing Option is delivered at the James Watt
College by College Lecturers. On this option, pupils carry
out their tasks in a ‘workshop’. There will also be a
Vocational Assistant with your group at all times to ensure
attendance, pupil welfare and act as a guide for those with
issues about the course.
What is the difference from school?
The main difference between traditional Standard Grade
subjects and the Inverclyde Vocational Programme is
how you will learn. The major factor is that all learning
takes place in a totally different environment to school and is
assessed in a college context.
The Hairdressing Option is predominantly classroom based
and aimed at pupils who are keen to learn about this
particular sector.
How are you assessed?
Pupils will be observed in a simulated workplace salon
environment to demonstrate the appropriate vocational
and customer care skills. Researching the hairdressing
industry and producing a portfolio of open book assignments
demonstrating their understanding of a career in
hairdressing.
Future Opportunites
Successful pupils who wish to continue their studies
in hairdressing can progress to a SVQ level 2 in
hairdressing qualification which focuses more on the
technical areas such as colouring and cutting.
