Sport & Leisure
Summary: Details of Sport & Leisure Vocational Programmes as part of the Schools Partnership with James Watt College.
What will you learn?
Inverclyde Vocational Programme is a 2-year course and
throughout S3 and S4 pupils will work towards 4
Intermediate 1 units:
- Working with Customers and Colleagues - Pupils will
develop the ability to oer a good level of service and
learn how to work well with customers and colleagues.
- Assist with Accidents & Emergencies - On completion of
this unit pupils will be able to assist with basic injuries,
illness, and a range of dierent emergency procedures.
Pupils will learn to prepare and complete the appropriate
reports that meet health and safety guidelines.
- Dealing with Equipment and Facilities - Vocational
pupils will learn how to set up, take down and store
sports equipment. This unit will also allow pupils to
develop an understanding of how to check for faults
with equipment and know how to deal with such
occurrences.
- Assist with Activity Sessions - You will plan, assist and
review activity sessions in a real working environment
and with a variety of participants and activities. Pupils
will learn to put together session plans for individuals,
groups and diering levels of ability, and learn to
understand the health and safety implications involved.
Pupils will be expected to identify and select the correct
equipment for the activity and participants, explain
and demonstrate the activity, and observe before giving
relevant feedback.
Apart from learning new skills relevant to the individual
units, pupils will also naturally work towards core skills such
as communication, numeracy, working with others, problem
solving and Information Technology – all of which are
invaluable when entering the world of work.
Where will you study?
The Sport & Leisure Option is delivered at both a local
leisure facility and at James Watt College by College
Lecturers. On this option, pupils carry out their tasks in a
‘workshop’ or classroom. There will also be a Vocational
Assistant with your group at all times to ensure attendance,
pupil welfare and act as a guide for those with issues about
the course.
What is the difference from school?
The main difference between traditional Standard Grade
subjects and the Inverclyde Vocational Programme is
how you will learn. The major factor is that all learning
takes place in a totally different environment to school and is
assessed in a college context.
The Sport and Leisure Option is not the same as the PE that
you receive at school. Pupils should be keen to adapt to a
leisure environment and interested in learning about the
Sport and Leisure Industry.
How are you assessed?
This option offers a modular training programme. Each
year you will complete a variety of units in leisure, sport and
coaching, therefore enabling pupils to have the opportunity
to gain a skills based qualication directly linked to the
Leisure Industry.
Each unit has a number of learning outcomes that you must
achieve in order for you to complete the full unit.
You will be assessed in dierent ways depending on the unit.
This may include observing you during practical work, some
written work & tests, and by answering questions.
If you successfully complete the vocational units that make
up your course, you will receive an Intermediate 1 award for
each unit that you have passed.
In the Scottish Qualifcations Authority’s framework, an
Intermediate 1 award rates the same as a General Level
award at Standard Grade.
Overall, there is no “pass” or “fail” and you will accumulate
all the units that you successfully achieve and be certifcated
for these.
Future Opportunites
The Sport & Leisure Option has been developed to
provide all pupils with a comprehensive
understanding of the Sport & Leisure Industry.
The Sport & Leisure Option has been developed in
order to recognise the needs of future employers and
it is hoped that the programme will act as a
springboard to gaining direct entry into workplace, a
Traineeship or Apprenticeship, or go on to further
progression at College.
Further training and education could lead to a career
in a variety of areas including Fitness Instructor or
Sports Coaching. Employment opportunities are
excellent – current research shows that there is a
shortage of appropriately trained personnel in the
sectors to which the Sport & Leisure Option is linked.
